What you see is what you get.” Newark Mayor Cory Booker used this adage to set up his remarks to 350 young New York professionals and socialites who gathered for the Partnership’s third Go Public benefit reception on February 13. He wasn’t talking about how people should view him. He was making a point about how they should view their communities. Mayor Booker went on to explain that if all you see is doom and gloom, that’s all you’ll ever have. But if you see hope and opportunity, then you can make a difference and bring about the change you have in mind.
Mayor Booker credited early lessons bestowed by his parents for shaping who he is and why he serves. They instilled in him that we have inherited a great legacy of service, and that “we drink deeply from wells we did not dig.” He spoke of an obligation and a privilege to carry on that tradition of service. Most important, he discovered there is no greater stage for making a difference and creating change than there is in government service.
These remarks perfectly echoed the theme of Go Public, a biannual reception to promote federal service that is hosted by the children of Partnership founder Samuel J. Heyman and his wife Ronnie. Co-chairs Kim and Larry Heyman, Jennifer and David Millstone, Eleanor and Rodney Propp, and Elizabeth and David Winter worked together to make sure Go Public offered a fun-filled evening that brought attention to the importance of America having a first-rate civil service and attracting the next generation of outstanding government leaders.
The Partnership for Public Service is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to revitalize our federal government by inspiring a new generation to serve and by transforming the way government works.
