UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-DAVIS RECEIVES CALL TO SERVE INNOVATION GRANT TO SPREAD WORD ON CAMPUS ABOUT FEDERAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES
WASHINGTON -- The Partnership for Public Service today announced that the University of California-Davis will receive one of five Call to Serve Innovation grants to promote federal job opportunities on campus and help students find jobs and internships in fields deemed “mission-critical” by the government.
The federal government has 273,000 mission-critical jobs to fill by the end of 2012 according to the Where the Jobs Are: Mission-Critical Opportunities for America report released by the nonprofit organization. Jobs at the top of the government’s mission-critical hiring list include cybersecurity and information technology, medical and public health, engineering, and accounting.
“There are interesting and challenging careers in the federal government for practically every major at the University of California-Davis – jobs that allow students to make a living and make a difference,” said Max Stier, Partnership for Public Service president and CEO. “The Innovation grant will help the university educate students on how to find these mission-critical job opportunities.”
Four additional schools were named recipients of the $5,000 Call to Serve Innovation grants: Stony Brook University (NY), University of South Carolina, Swarthmore College and the University of Chicago.
To be eligible for the grant, institutions were required to have a least one mission-critical academic department and a commitment from a staff or faculty member in that department to assist in promoting federal service. Academic departments considered by the federal government to be mission-critical include engineering, physical and biological sciences, business, accounting, information technology/cybersecurity, medical, nursing, and public health, among others.
The five Call to Serve Innovation grant schools will use their grants to host federal job fairs and other events, conduct ongoing outreach to agencies and identify new ways to inform students about federal service.
Additionally, funds may be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment and staffing support necessary to expand the university’s existing efforts to promote federal service.
University of California-Davis representatives will be in Washington, D.C. next month with the other Innovation grant awardees to learn first-hand about best practices for promoting federal service opportunities on campuses.
The Partnership’s Call to Serve initiative is designed to educate a new generation about the importance of a strong civil service, help strengthen links between federal agencies and campuses and provide students with information about federal employment. The Call to Serve network consists of more than 700 colleges and universities and 75 federal agencies
