Great news for job seekers this Labor Day: the federal government is hiring tens of thousands of new employees, according to new projections in Where the Jobs Are 2009: Mission-Critical Opportunities for America, released today by the Partnership for Public Service. The online projections outline government-wide, mission-critical hiring needs through 2012 and are based on a survey of 35 federal agencies representing nearly 99 percent of the 1.9 million member federal workforce.
Available at http://wherethejobsare.org, the online data lists nearly 273,000 mission-critical jobs that need to be filled in the next three years, a 41 percent increase compared to the organization’s 2007 survey. Where the Jobs Are is the only comprehensive projection of the federal government’s hiring needs and is searchable by occupation or by agency.

The 2009 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings released today evaluate employee satisfaction across government in 278 federal agencies and subcomponents. Overall, employee satisfaction is up 2.4 percent, from 61.8 to 63.3, with 71 percent of agencies improving their Best Places to Work index score since the last rankings in 2007.
The Best Places to Work rankings, compiled by the Partnership for Public Service and American University’s Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation, are based on a survey conducted by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management that represents the views of 212,000 federal employees. Agencies are ranked in three categories: large (2,000 or more employees), small or subcomponent. They are also ranked in ten workplace categories, including leadership, work/life balance, and pay and benefits.

The number of Americans who view working for the federal government as a desirable career option is growing substantially, according to new nationwide Gallup data obtained by the Partnership for Public Service.
The online Gallup public opinion survey found that 40 percent of American workers are open to considering federal careers, up from only 24 percent in 2006. Moreover, 66 percent said they would consider applying for a federal job if they were seeking employment in the next two years.
The new interest comes at the start of a four-year cycle in which the government will hire nearly 600,000 workers due to retirements, normal attrition, the economic stimulus package and other new spending, according to estimates by the Partnership.

College students looking for well-paid, meaningful internships take note: Uncle Sam is hiring.
According to the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service, the federal government will hire about 60,000 student interns in 2009. There will be jobs for every academic major at more than 100 federal agencies including the Departments of Treasury, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, and even at the White House.
However, a new Partnership for Public Service report released today, Leaving Talent on the Table: The Need to Capitalize on High Performing Student Interns, found that few of these student interns will be hired for full-time, civil service jobs upon graduation.

Ms. Burke is Faculty Research Fellow at the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy and member of the faculty at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, both at Harvard University. The war for talent is hitting the federal government hard, as more than one-third of the full-time permanent federal workforce gets ready to retire or leave in the next five years, according to the Partnership for Public Service at today’s launch of FedExperience Transitions to Government – an initiative to help match government’s critical hiring needs with the talents of baby boomers looking for encore careers where they can find interesting and challenging work.
At the launch, the Partnership and IBM, a major potential source of talent, announced that they will pilot the Transitions to Government initiative with the U.S. Department of Treasury. The goal is to identify, recruit, and hire interested IBM employees and retirees and match them to key federal government jobs.
