WANTED: AMERICA’S FINEST PUBLIC SERVANTS FOR GOVERNMENT “OSCAR”

Washington, D.C. — The Partnership for Public Service today issued a last call for nominations for the 2007 Service to America Medals — the most prestigious awards to honor the nation’s public servants — extending the deadline to March 8, 2007.

Nine medals will be awarded to outstanding federal employees, including the coveted Federal Employee of the Year Medal. Winners will be selected based on three main criteria: impact of their work on the needs of the nation, on-the-job innovation and commitment to public service.

Previous medal winners include: the IRS employee responsible for the eFile system that gets millions their tax refunds in as few as 10 days; the Immigration and Customs Enforcement team who shut down an international drug smuggling ring using rented babies to smuggle cocaine in baby formula cans; the FTC team who created the national “Do Not Call” registry, and the CDC scientist leading the world’s efforts to prepare for a catastrophic flu pandemic.

Medal categories include Homeland Security, Career Achievement, Call to Service, Citizen Services, International Affairs, Justice and Law Enforcement, National Security, and Science and Environment.  Nominations may be submitted at servicetoamericamedals.org through March 8, 2007.  Self-nominations are not accepted.  The awards are accompanied by cash prizes, from $3,000 to $10,000.

The awardees will be honored at a Washington D.C. gala in September with government, business and entertainment leaders, including master of ceremonies, Campbell Brown, co-anchor of NBC’s Today, Weekend Edition. Thirty finalists will be announced in June at a Capitol Hill awards breakfast with federal agency leaders and Members of Congress.
