PARTNERSHIP FOR PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCES 2009 SERVICE TO AMERICA MEDAL FINALISTS; PRESTIGIOUS AWARD SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON THE NATION'S TOP PUBLIC SERVANTS

WASHINGTON – The Partnership for Public Service today announced the 30 Service to America Medal finalists – outstanding federal workers who are making high-impact contributions critical to the health, safety and well-being of Americans.

The 30 finalists will be honored at a Service to America Medals Capitol Hill ceremony on Wednesday, May 6, as part of Public Service Recognition Week.

The finalists are contenders for nine prestigious Service to America Medals, including Federal Employee of the Year, set to be presented on September 23 at a Washington, D.C. black-tie gala. The Service to America Medals have earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious awards dedicated to celebrating America’s civil servants.

“Too often the people who do our nation’s work go unnoticed, that’s why the Service to America Medals are so important,” said Max Stier, Partnership for Public Service President and CEO. “They tell the true stories of the remarkable work that our federal employees do each and every day. You’re seeing government at its very best.”

This year’s finalists include federal workers whose achievements are helping Americans avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes, protecting our military and veterans, prosecuting tax fraud, generating renewable energy, reducing air pollution, protecting our water supplies, increasing maritime and transportation security, creating new vaccines and treatments against common diseases and illnesses, exploring the outer boundaries of space, unraveling the mysteries of superconductivity and DNA sequencing, protecting endangered species, reducing homelessness and much more.

Nineteen of the medal contenders are from the D.C.-metro area; others hail from Anchorage, Alaska, Atlanta, New York City, Canandaigua, N.Y., Cincinnati, Dayton, Ohio, San Francisco, Richmond and Roanoke, Va., and Tampa, Fla. One finalist lives and works in Pakistan.

The finalists work at the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, Treasury and Veterans Affairs; the Government Accountability Office; General Services Administration; Social Security Administration; NASA, ODNI, USAID, the EPA and the FDIC.

A list of the 30 Service to America Medal finalists is attached. The finalists were selected from nearly 400 nominations. More information about the program is available at www.servicetoamericamedals.org.

The Service to America Medals program honors the best in our federal workforce and works to inspire a new generation to consider public service careers by sharing the inspiring stories of unsung heroes with the general public. Surveys show that many Americans do not know what the federal government does for them each and every day – or the fact that there are federal jobs available in practically every interest and skill area, in all 50 states and around the world.

The Partnership for Public Service works to revitalize the federal government by inspiring a new generation to serve and by transforming the way government works.  Visit www.ourpublicservice.org for more information.
