PARTNERSHIP FOR PUBLIC SERVICE APPLAUDS SENATE PASSAGE OF THE "PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTMENT EFFICIENCY AND STREAMLINING
ACT OF 2011"
WASHINGTON – The Partnership for Public Service President and CEO Max Stier released the following statement commending the leadership of the U.S. Senate on the passage of S. 679, the Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011, and its companion measure, S. Res. 116:
"Passage of this legislation represents an important step in unplugging the political appointee process. Together these measures will reduce the number of executive positions subject to Senate confirmation and streamline the confirmations process for a number of other politically appointed positions.
In a time of great partisan divide, the U.S. Senate, in particular Senators Harry Reid (D-NV), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), and Susan Collins (R-ME), worked together to achieve real reform for the political appointee process. The Partnership applauds these efforts and looks forward to even further reform to allow our federal government to operate more efficiently and effectively."
The Partnership called on Congress and the White House to make major fixes to the presidential transition process in its Ready to Govern: Improving the Presidential Transition report released in January 2010. Report recommendations include reducing the number of Senate-confirmed politically appointed positions.
