Resources for Students and Young Professionals

Students/Young Professionals: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can participate in the Public Service Career and Internship Fair?
Although the event is primarily intended for students and young professionals, it is open to the public.
  2. Is there a registration fee for students and jobseekers?
The fair is FREE for students and jobseekers.
  3. Where is the event taking place? How do I get there?
The event will take place at the National Building Museum, located at 401 F Street NW in Washington, D.C. across the street from the Judiciary Square metro station on the red line. For metro accessibility, directions and parking information, please click here.
  4. Do I need copies of my resume?
Resumes are not mandatory, and you should attend even if you don't have a completed resume. However, if you are actively seeking a job or internship, it is to your benefit to bring and distribute copies of your resume at the event.

Bring a federal resume if you've already created one. If not, a normal resume is fine for letting agencies know about your skills, background and experiences. Once you begin applying for a job with the federal government, you will need to create a federal resume. For tips on building a federal resume, click here.
  5. How can I best prepare myself for the event and maximize my time with agency recruiters?
  • Do your homework! Review the list of attending agencies and consult their Web sites. Research what they do and what employment opportunities they offer. Look over the floor plan of the event; know where to prioritize your time and how to find the agencies that interest you most.

  • Prepare a 30-60 second “elevator pitch” to introduce yourself to a representative, express your interest in their agency and convey your desire to learn more about their available positions. Prepare questions for representatives that relay your interest and knowledge. For sample questions, please see “Tips and Strategies for Students and Jobseekers.”

  • Prepare or edit your resume to highlight those skills and experiences most applicable to the type of government position you are interested in obtaining.
