Partnership for Public Service statement on the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress’s recommendations

July 29, 2021

The Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress has done an outstanding job putting together thoughtful, workable recommendations to strengthen staff capacity, diversity, equity and inclusion; improve congressional internships and fellowships; and expand accessibility to the Capitol complex. Implementation of these recommendations will allow Congress to better attract and retain a diverse workforce by promoting professional development and by strengthening fellowship and internship experiences that serve as important hiring pipelines. The proposed accessibility changes will ensure that more members of the public can engage with their elected representatives.

“The Partnership for Public Service appreciates the committee’s thorough attention to these critical issues and applauds its bipartisan efforts to strengthen Congress,” said Jeff McNichols, director of the Partnership’s Alliance for Congress.

The Alliance for Congress was a nonpartisan initiative that strived to build a Congress that earned the public trust by more effectively listening, leading and legislating, as well as helping the institution invest in its own capacity to tackle big issues and serve the public good.
