Partnership for Public Service applauds the Biden administration’s early achievements on key management issues at the 200-day mark

August 6, 2021

WASHINGTON – The nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service released the following statement from President and CEO Max Stier in advance of President Joe Biden’s 200th day in office on Saturday, August 7.

“President Biden’s focus on supporting the federal workforce is good news for our country and our democracy,” Stier said. “For our government to continue to meet the challenges of the moment and those to come, the president and his leadership team must continue to devote effort and resources to recruiting, developing and retaining a diverse workforce, improving employee engagement, and increasing public confidence in government through better customer service.”

Stier continued, “The Biden administration’s early attention to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the federal government is important work that will help our government better reflect and serve the people of this country. We look forward to continued action on this issue and working with the administration to help build a government that can better serve the public.”

The Partnership applauds the Biden administration on the following federal management accomplishments in its first 200 days:

  • Issuing guidance on the future of work in federal agencies after the pandemic, including hybrid and remote work options.
  • Streamlining the process of rehiring former federal employees.
  • Establishing the Federal Workforce Competency Initiative to strengthen the federal workforce by providing current data for a wide variety of human capital activities, including job design, recruitment, selection, performance management, training and career development.
  • Taking measures to improve government transparency, including long-awaited updates to analytics.gov and regulations.gov
  • Developing a more flexible model from the Office of Management and Budget and General Services Administration for distributing $1 billion from the Technology Modernization Fund to federal agencies.
  • Working to implement the National AI Initiative called for by Congress in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021.

Having confirmed appointees in critical management positions is essential to the Biden administration’s continued success on management issues. The Biden administration has filled certain key management positions like the deputy director for management at the Office of Management and Budget, the director of the Office of Personnel Management and the General Services Administration administrator. Other important positions remain vacant with no nominee, including the director of OMB, the OMB controller and the administrator of OMB’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. The Partnership encourages the administration and the Senate to work together to fill these important positions expeditiously.
