February 2, 2021

WASHINGTON – The nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service released the following statement from President and CEO Max Stier after Pete Buttigieg was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to become secretary of transportation.

“During his confirmation hearing to be transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg committed to being a responsible steward of public resources and the public trust,” Stier said. “With more than 52,000 employees, the majority of whom are located outside of the Washington, D.C. area, the Department of Transportation is a large and complex agency requiring strong and innovative leadership. We applaud Secretary Buttigieg for being willing to take on the multiple challenges of public service. The Partnership for Public Service looks forward to working with him and his leadership team.”

The Partnership’s Department of Transportation oversight snapshot provides a wide array of data and insights regarding the department. Some key data points include:

  • 2019 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government score and rank: 65.7, ranking fifth out of 17 large agencies
  • Employee confidence in whistleblower protections: 67.6 percent which is 3.1 percent higher than the government-wide score of 64.5 percent
  • Number of Senate-confirmed positions: 17

In addition to the oversight snapshots, the Partnership produces and maintains several other resources to assess and analyze the health of the federal government. These include a political appointments tracker with The Washington Post to follow the progress of more than 750 of President Biden’s Senate-confirmed political appointments, and the annual Best Places to Work in the Federal Government®  rankings, produced by the Partnership and  Boston Consulting Group, which measure employee engagement government-wide as well as at individual departments, agencies and subcomponents.
