Since the Partnership for Public Service’s founding in 2001, we’ve worked to inspire the next generation to serve. Through our long-standing Call to Serve network, we’ve partnered with colleges, universities and government agencies to support students in their journey to explore and pursue careers in government. We know that recruiting, onboarding, and supervising interns takes time, thoughtful planning, and resources. We also know that when done well, internship programs can help agencies build strong teams, shape their culture, and strengthen their workforce for years to come.

Effective Practices for Intern, Recruitment, Onboarding, and Development is a self-paced eLearning course for government agency staff interested in building an intern program from the ground up, looking to enhance current practices, or simply interested in creating a more impactful experience for interns.

Learners will be provided with the information and tools necessary to effectively run an intern program at all stages – recruitment, onboarding and program duration. This course also integrates tools and resources for intern supervisors.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Build a recruitment strategy and partner effectively with universities

Onboard interns to set them up for success

Equip supervisors to support and develop interns effectively

Create meaningful, engaging programming that builds skills and community

Course Structure

This course consists of four modules completed through our eLearning Platform. It includes engaging and interactive course content and activities designed to help you apply key concepts to your program’s context.

Through videos from subject matter experts, editable tools, and written content you will be able to build an intern program that doesn’t just meet your agency’s needs but inspires interns to continue their journey in public service.

Onboarding

a. Create welcoming and engaging experiences from day one

b. Manage logistics (e.g., documentation, clearances, equipment)

c. Foster community through cohort-based programming and communication

Supervision

a. Apply best practices for intern management and growth

b. Support supervisors with tools and guidance

Lesson 4:

Programming

a. Design workshops, social events, and mentoring opportunities

b. Use experiential, cohort-based learning to create lasting impact

Q: Who is eligible to apply?

eLearning courses and certificates are designed for all public service leaders, HR professionals and employees in state, local and federal government. Offerings may be recommended for specific types of leaders (e.g., emerging, leader of projects, leader of leaders or leader of organizations). But other leaders may also sign up.

Q: Am I eligible?

Everyone is eligible to participate in our courses, whether you are a current or former government employee, aspiring to be a government employee, or interested in learning about the unique challenges and opportunities of government work.

Q: How will I know if I have signed up for the course correctly?

After purchasing a course, you will receive an automated message from our eLearning platform with a receipt and instructions on how to create an account.

Q: Can I share course access?

No. Sharing courses with others is prohibited. We ask users to keep their login credentials to themselves. (Terms of Use)

Q: How much does the course cost?

This course costs $585.

Q: Can I purchase a course on behalf of someone else?

Yes, you can purchase a single course, or multiple “seats” for a single course or certificate program. Upon payment, you will be emailed a list of voucher codes that allow users to gain access to the course.

Q: When is payment due?

Payment is due before you create an account and start a course or program. In lieu of direct payment, potential users (or those purchasing multiple seats) can request an invoice for their organization to process. Following the confirmed payment from an invoice, an automated email confirming receipt, a voucher code and steps to create an account will be emailed. Q: What forms of payment do you accept for tuition payment?

We accept the following forms of payment:

Credit card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express)
Purchase order or Standard Form 182 (SF-182)
Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfer or check

Q: For how long do I have access a this course?

You have access to this course for 60 days after enrollment. You’ll retain access to all materials for 1 additional week after your 60 days have ended.

Q: I am no longer able to complete a course, will I receive a refund?

All eLearning course purchases are nonrefundable. Once a course has been purchased, no refunds will be issued.

Q: Where will sessions take place?

All courses are in Moodle, an online learning platform that hosts all the course materials, activities, and resources you will need. After you have purchased your course and set up your account, you will be able to access your course content, participate in discussion forums, complete course activities, and track your progress. Our course is organized into modules and every module has several lessons.

The course is asynchronous. This means you can start and stop the course on your own time as long as you complete it before your access expires.

Q: Can I take the course using any device?

While you can use any device including laptop, desktop computer, phones, and tablets, we highly encourage the use of laptops or desktop for optimal user experience. We are working diligently to improve the mobile and app users experience.
