Everything you need to know about the government shutdown

Congress has until midnight on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, to pass a spending bill to avoid a partial government shutdown. Read our statement.

Our political leaders are elected to serve the public, and by failing to keep the government fully funded and working they are failing to uphold that central promise to the American people.

Why it matters

After a record 43-day shutdown in the fall of 2025, Congress once again finds itself at an impasse, this time over funding the Department of Homeland Security following the violent events in Minnesota in recent weeks.

Those events resulted from the Trump administration’s fundamental misuse of government authority. Increased transparency and accountability is needed at DHS, but our elected officials should not have to feel as though forcing a shutdown is the only way to demand reform.

Everyone loses in a shutdown, especially the American public and the federal employees who serve them. Congress must reassert its constitutional authority to conduct more rigorous oversight of the executive branch and pass legislation to make government shutdowns a thing of the past.

“The time is long overdue to end the continual threat of shutdowns and the suspension of congressionally approved services so that our government can better serve the public good and concentrate on solving our substantial and pressing domestic and international challenges.”

Partnership President and CEO
