The Partnership for Public Service has launched the Career Pivot Bootcamp, a free online course specifically designed for current and former federal employees looking to transition to the private, nonprofit or higher education sectors, or to state and local government.

Supporting civil servants in times of turmoil

Ongoing reductions in force and other disruptions to the civil service are significantly affecting the federal workforce, leading many talented and experienced public servants to seek opportunities in other sectors.

Federal employees possess highly specialized knowledge and skills, making the sudden loss of employment extremely difficult. These professionals require specific guidance to effectively translate their unique expertise for the private sector.

The Career Pivot Bootcamp aims to meet this need, equipping federal civil servants with actionable content to effectively navigate their career transition.

Establishing the Career Pivot Bootcamp

The bootcamp was developed based on testimonials and questions from affected federal employees who attended the Partnership’s FedSupport webinars—a virtual series that provides timely updates and answers about the current state of the federal workforce.

Webinar attendees highlighted a critical need for tailored resources, such as guidance on writing nonfederal resumes, tips for navigating the job market and strategies for late-career transitions.

They also noted that while they have encountered numerous career-search tools and resources, the sheer volume and lack of central organization could feel overwhelming.

Leveraging the Partnership’s expertise

Drawing on over two decades of experience strengthening government, the bootcamp combines the Partnership’s diverse expertise, including career advising insights honed through our Call to Serve network and leadership development resources from our Public Service Leadership Institute®.

This initiative reflects the Partnership’s long-standing advocacy for recognizing and supporting our nation’s public servants, even as their career paths evolve.

What you will learn

The Career Pivot Bootcamp delivers a robust curriculum through seven self-paced modules, covering the essential elements job seekers need to navigate their transition to nonfederal sectors.

Participants have access to expert-led training videos, downloadable tools and other resources to help them:

  • Craft an effective elevator pitch
  • Build and maintain a professional network
  • Write compelling resumes and cover letters
  • Optimize a LinkedIn profile
  • Prepare for interviews with confidence
  • Understand and negotiate salary offers

The program also offers former federal employees guidance on how to meaningfully and ethically leverage AI tools during a career pivot.

Beyond these core job search components, the bootcamp also offers unique and valuable career transition resources tailored to the experiences of former federal employees. These include strategies for late-career job changes, skill assesment tools and a career roadmap builder.

Recognizing that career transitions are significant life events, the program encourages participants to reflect on their broader life goals and aspirations to ensure their next role aligns with their vision for the future.
