Alliance for Congress Statement Marking the One-Year Anniversary of the Jan. 6 Insurrection

January 6, 2022

WASHINGTON — Jeff McNichols, director of the Alliance for Congress today released the following statement reflecting on the year anniversary of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

“One year ago, our country experienced an unprecedented assault on our democracy. As our country continues to reckon with the violent attack, it is important to recognize that the siege left many individuals, including the dedicated public servants who work for Congress, traumatized and fearful for their safety.

“Despite this extreme adversity, these public servants have continued to work tirelessly to uphold and support our democracy. Their resilience is admirable, and we thank them for their commitment to ensuring a well-functioning government and for their service to our nation.

“The one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection offers an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the ways we can respect and honor each other as a diverse nation. While strong emotions persist even today and are indicative of the long journey ahead to improve the civility and effectiveness of our legislative branch, there are reasons to be hopeful. Efforts like those of the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress and numerous civil society organizations are laying the groundwork for a stronger, healthier and more effective institution. Success, however, will require a cross-partisan, bicameral commitment.

“While we will never forget the tragic events of Jan. 6, 2021, we will push forward and recommit to building a better Congress and a stronger democracy for our country.”

The Alliance for Congress was a nonpartisan initiative that strived to build a Congress that earned the public trust by more effectively listening, leading and legislating, as well as helping the institution invest in its own capacity to tackle big issues and serve the public good.
