Statement on Election of Donald Trump as 47th President

November 6, 2024

Following the decision by several major media outlets, including the Associated Press, to call the presidential election, the nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service today released the following statement from President and CEO Max Stier on former President Donald Trump’s election as the 47th president of the United States:

“Congratulations to former President Donald Trump on his election to a second presidential term. The right to vote is a hallmark of our democracy, and millions of Americans exercised this right in selecting him to lead our nation for the next four years.

“Attention must now turn to executing an effective transition of power, and our government stands ready to assist. But to have that assistance, the Trump transition team must enter into agreements with the White House, the General Services Administration, the Department of Justice and other entities, allowing access to critical support like security clearances, conflict of interest reviews, direct communication with agencies and other information vital for an effective transition.

“An incoming administration needs to be ready to govern on Day One. Presidential transitions are complex and challenging under any circumstances, and trying to execute one without this support is like running a race with your shoes tied together. Declining this support is a tremendous and unnecessary risk to national security and readiness.

“Our nation will have a new president in a few short weeks. In the meantime, the transition’s success will be our nation’s success.”

The Partnership encourages the incoming Trump team to focus on three near-term priorities to ensure it is ready to lead the most complex and meaningful organization in the world:

  • Engage immediately with the government transition process that exists to help effect an orderly and successful transfer of power.
  • Select capable leaders committed to the public good and rule of law.
  • Recognize the need to work productively and collaboratively with the career experts in government.

The Partnership for Public Service’s Center for Presidential Transition® serves as the premier nonpartisan source of information and resources to help presidential candidates and their teams lay the groundwork for a new administration or for a president’s second term. The Center provides critical assistance on how to organize and carry out an effective transition, helps agency career executives prepare for new political leadership, offers guidance to political appointees on the unique aspects of government leadership and engages with Congress to promote transition reforms.
