Partnership for Public Service Statement on the termination of the Presidential Management Fellows Program

February 20, 2025

WASHINGTON – The nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service today released the following statement from the Partnership’s president and CEO Max Stier in response to President Donald Trump’s new executive order terminating the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program:

“Eliminating the Presidential Management Fellows Program dismantles an outstanding young talent pipeline and is a huge loss for our government.

Taking away a highly-competitive, merit-based program that has developed exceptional government leaders for over 40 years not only sends the wrong message to the next generation about public service, but also contradicts efforts to build a more effective and innovative government. With just over 7% of the federal workforce under 30, this decision risks widening the talent and critical skills gaps even further, and the holes will be felt in our government for years to come.”

During the past 24 years, the nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service has been dedicated to building a better government and a stronger democracy. We work across administrations to help transform the way government works by providing agencies with the data insights they need to succeed, developing effective leaders, inspiring the next generation to public service, facilitating smooth presidential transitions and recognizing exceptional federal employees.
