The Partnership for Public Service and The Washington Post announce launch of Political Appointee Tracker for Trump’s second term

January 8, 2025

The tracker will follow the progress of roughly 800 of President-elect Donald Trump’s nominations for Senate-confirmed political appointments

WASHINGTON – The nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service, in partnership with The Washington Post, today announced the launch of the political appointments tracker to follow and analyze the progress of roughly 800 of President-elect Donald Trump’s nominations for Senate-confirmed political appointments.

The tracker, first launched in 2016, provides the most comprehensive data and analysis of the political appointments process. Presidents are required to fill the executive branch and independent agencies with roughly 4,000 of these positions, 1,300 of which require Senate confirmation. The tracker follows the most senior of these Senate-confirmed positions from nomination through confirmation.

The new Trump Political Appointee Tracker includes Cabinet secretaries, deputy and assistant secretaries, chief financial officers, general counsels, heads of major federal departments, ambassadors and other critical leadership jobs. It also features updates to enhance the user experience and data visualizations that reveal key confirmation and nomination trends.

“Since its launch in 2016, the tracker has become the preeminent source of data and analysis about thousands of political appointments and vacancies for the past two presidential administrations,” said Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service. “We’re excited to continue our collaboration with The Washington Post to keep the public informed about the status of the most significant leadership roles responsible for managing the government’s work to deliver services essential for daily life, from national security to Social Security and Medicare to transportation infrastructure and food safety.”

The Partnership’s Center for Presidential Transition® provides resources for prospective political appointees, including Ready to Serve, which helps candidates interested in a political appointment to evaluate their qualifications and navigate the complex application, nomination and confirmation processes. Additionally, the new Agency Performance Dashboards, developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, provide incoming political appointees with key data about the operations, workforce and organizational health of major federal agencies.

During the past 24 years, the nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service has been dedicated to building a better government and a stronger democracy. We work across administrations to help transform the way government works by providing agencies with the data insights they need to succeed, developing effective leaders, inspiring the next generation to public service, facilitating smooth presidential transitions and recognizing exceptional federal employees.
