The nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service was founded in 2001 with big ambitions—to make our government work more effectively for the American people.
Recognizing that our democracy depends on the quality of government, our early focus was on restoring pride in federal work and bringing new talent into public service—an urgent challenge and mission championed by our founder, philanthropist Samuel J. Heyman, who started his career in the Justice Department.
Since then, with founding President and CEO Max Stier at the helm, our nonpartisan work has continually evolved to help our government meet the challenges of the moment. Today, we are the premier nonprofit organization working to build a better government and a stronger democracy.
Over the past 25 years and across five presidential administrations, we have developed a broad suite of leadership and workforce programs through the Public Service Leadership Institute® that offer federal, state and local agencies and leaders crucial training and insights to better serve the public.
Along the way, we championed 75 pieces of legislation for better government and launched flagship initiatives that elevated our brand and impact, including the leading recognition program for career civil servants, the Service to America Medals®, as well as the Center for Presidential Transition® and the Best Places to Work in the Federal Government® program. Today, our AI Center for Government® is an emerging authority on fostering the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence in the public sector.
Now, the Partnership is countering the unprecedented disruptions to the federal workforce, federal agencies and federal funding with conviction and confidence, pivoting to a new strategy that strives to protect our government from further harm, while making it more effective, responsive and accountable in the future.
Building on our 25-year history, we are expanding our impact in this extraordinary moment, enabling our government to confront its challenges head-on and meet its responsibilities to the public.
