WASHINGTON – The nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service today released the following statement from President and CEO Max Stier marking the end of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), ahead of the July 4th closure date set by President Trump’s founding executive order:
“DOGE was sold to the American people as a war on waste. Instead, it became an engine of it, costing $1,028 per U.S. taxpayer by our analysis. In a single year, the Trump Administration forced out more than 300,000 career civil servants, cancelled thousands of contracts and grants, and dismantled institutions built over decades. Although DOGE has officially ended in name, its work continues to impact the American people.
“The savings it promised never materialized. In their place, the federal government lost expertise, credibility, and the ability to effectively serve the public.
“The government has long needed reform, but those reforms must deliver for the American people first. Rather than arbitrarily cutting the workforce, programs, and services, DOGE could have modernized outdated IT systems, improved the customer experience, and tackled the many other problems standing in the way of effective government.
“The civil servants who remain have endured the brunt of this administration’s disregard for professional public servants. According to the Partnership’s Public Service Viewpoint Survey, barely a third of civil servants would recommend their agency as a workplace, yet more than 95% still say serving the public good matters to them.
“Civil servants must have shared values around a commitment to public good and stewardship of public trust. These principles are critical to an effective and efficient federal government. As we near the 250th anniversary of our country’s founding, civil servants embody the promise of public service: a capable government built on merit and expertise that serves every American.”
The Partnership for Public Service is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to building a better government and a stronger democracy.
Over the past 25 years and across five presidential administrations, we have offered government agencies and leaders crucial training and insights to better serve the public, championed legislation for effective government and shined a spotlight on the achievements of the federal workforce.
Now, building on our decades of experience, we engage the public about the value of government and how its erosion harms us all and advance reforms that seek to make our federal institutions more effective, responsive and accountable to the American people. We also strengthen leadership in federal, state and local government, help federal workers navigate an increasingly complex federal environment and provide former public servants with opportunities to shape efforts to transform government.
