I would like to thank Ahmad Maaty currently serves as a Senior Economist with the U.S. Department of Justice, developing Federal regulations for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). He worked in a similar regulatory capacity at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, including as Acting Chief Economist with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He also deployed as an Inter-Governmental Affairs Specialist during FEMA emergency responses to disaster declarations in Texas and Puerto Rico. Previously, Ahmad served as a Franklin Fellow with the U.S. Department of State’s Office of U.S. Foreign Assistance Resources, helping craft State and USAID’s economic growth budget and strategy. He also helped introduce data tools to guide assistance as a founding member of the Country Data Analytics team, liaising with the White House National Security Council on bi-lateral investment opportunities. Ahmad first joined State ten years earlier, helping cover the Middle East portfolio before the United Nations Security Council for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.
This Public Service Recognition Week, I'm reflecting on the profound impact of clear communication in our collective efforts to build stronger, more cohesive power of clear communication in building stronger communities. Public servants are united in a common mission regardless of our level (quasi-governmental, local, county, state, or federal). We work together on all levels, on the same team, towards shared goals. We listen actively and speak plainly by ditching jargon for clear, concise language everyone can understand. We ask open-ended questions to encourage transparent and specific responses instead of making assumptions. We give everyone a voice, fostering open dialogue where everyone feels heard and valued. We follow up to deepen connections with one-on-one conversations in the community and with our colleagues. We focus on common ground, seeking solutions that benefit everyone, not just a select few. We listen with empathy and understand people's needs and concerns to build trust and stronger relationships. I would like to thank Mayeen Mohammedi, who serves as a Country Desk Officer for the Europe, Mediterranean, and Asia region for the United States Peace Corps. Mayeen worked on the Public Information and Communications team at the United Nations Department of Safety and Security. She also served as an Anti-Racism fellow with the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative and as a Citizen Historian with the 1947 Partition Archive, a nonprofit organization which documents eyewitness accounts from the partition of India. Mayeen has previously lived in The Gambia, West Africa for two years to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer and worked on issues like child marriage, female genital mutilation, and girls’ education in the village of Gambisara during her service. She also served as president of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, sparking unprecedented conversations about immigration, colonization, race, and privilege within the volunteer community.
